COMMISSION WORK (Do I Take Commissions?…Maybe.)

My commission time is very limited, both because I am spending a LOT of time and energy on the PaintingBig project and because when I’m not, I like to have time to work on my own stuff! That said, I am open to taking on a very small number of commission clients.

So, IF:

  1. You have a really nice high-quality model you want painted (no period pieces, dicey sculpts, or “needs help” models need apply, life is too short to take commissions painting less-than-awesome models);

  2. I am really honestly interested in and/or excited to paint the model in question;

AND:

  1. You’ll let me feature it on PaintingBig;

  2. You’ll work with me on color scheme/artistic license or just flat-out let me throw color ideas at you till you hear one you like, and I will continually keep you updated on progress in case we need to change or adjust something along these lines;

  3. There are NO URGENT DEADLINES (because the PaintingBig project is still my top priority); and, finally,

  4. You’ll pay me what my time is worth. Which is, at the moment, $25 an hour. I will give you an estimate before we lock it down, and ongoing updates as the work progresses. You provide the model. Half the money up front, half on completion.

    Want a ballpark? Average 28mm model (though I’m not interested in many of those, I’d much rather Paint Big) with any amount of detail/NMM/freehand/special basing runs around 12-15 hours. 54mm-75mm models can go anywhere from 20 to 40 hours depending on detail. Example: the Forge World Leman Russ (big, multipart, ridiculously detailed, NMM, two large bases) took me just short of 40 hours. Soldier:76, a full 1/6th scale statue with tons of painted texture work, took me 140 hours. If you break it down, a 28mm commission will then at minimum cost you around $300, maybe $250 if it’s really simple and goes really fast. Anything larger or very elaborate quickly gets into the $500+ range. And gigantic projects like huge dragons or Overwatch statues are going to run into the thousands of dollars.
